Which type on incision or placement method should I use?
Dr. Peña most often recommends a periareolar incision (surrounding the nipple) and submuscular implant placement (below the breast muscle); however, your ideal choices will depend on a variety of factors including your current breast size and shape, your health history, and your breast surgery goals. During the initial consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about your options in-depth and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Recently, Dr Peña has been using the inframammary incision more often since studies have shown a slightly lower incidence of capsular contracture with this approach> Infra-Mammary Incision.
Which type of breast implant is better?
Dr. Peña uses silicone implants more often than saline. He feels silicone offers benefits saline cannot. For instance, many patients tend to prefer the look and feel of silicone, an important consideration when striving for natural-looking results. However, for some patients who have a significant amount of their own breast tissue, a saline implant will give excellent results.
Is breastfeeding permitted after breast enlargement surgery?
If done by a skilled, experienced surgeon, breast implants should not prevent a patient from being able to breast feed. Please talk to Dr. Peña if you plan to have children in the future since this may affect the surgical techniques used.
Will breast implants interfere with mammogram results?
When interpreting mammogram results, there have been issues of breast implants presenting a challenge. Dr. Peña will review the medical information available regarding breast surgery and mammograms and ask that you discuss the presence of implants with your radiographer in order to ensure measures are taken for accuracy. Placing the implants below the muscle helps in separating the breast tissue from the implant during mammography.
How long do breast implants hold their shape?
The type of implant chosen and the surgical methods used will determine your breast augmentation results over the long-term. Breast implants can last 15 years or more. In some cases, a breast lift may be desired down the road to help combat sagging due to age. Dr. Peña will discuss the longevity of breast enlargement surgery with you during your first cosmetic surgery visit.
