An arm lift or brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgery that address sagging underarm skin. The surgical procedure is effective in removing extra fat deposits and skin and tightening underarm skin tissue. This procedure will help individuals who are trouble by excess, loose underarm skin, sometimes referred to as “bat-wings.”
As we age, most people experience some sagging, wrinkled underarm skin. For those individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight the stretch underarm skin is noticeable and may limit a person’s choice in clothing and activities.

Who is a Candidate for an Arm Lift?
Naples Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Manuel Peña offers expert arm lift surgery. This procedure is often included with an upper or full body lift surgeries. This procedure is typically recommended for post bariatric surgical patients. Also referred to as Dermo-lipectomy, the body lift is a great example of how combining plastic surgery techniques can lead to dramatic results, improved efficiency, and reduced surgical costs for our patients.
How is an Arm Lift Procedure Performed?
Dr. Peña advises his patients that if the amount of their fat and skin sag is substantial, a full brachioplasty will probably be necessary. In a full arm lift, liposuction is used to remove any excess fat deposits on the underarm. Following liposuction, the patient’s underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped and excess skin removed. A full brachioplasty is effective in improving the shape and appearance of the arm, but patients are advised that a large incision is necessary. The exact length of the incision depends upon the amount of fat and the loose skin that hangs down when the arm is extended which needs to be removed for optimal results.
For those patients with a lesser amount of loose and stretched skin, liposuction plus tightening with minimally invasive “internal radiofrequency” procedure can take care of the problem. As with the full brachioplasty, liposuction is used and excess skin is stimulated to tighten over time. The patient selection for this minimally invasive procedure is very limited to maximize results with good candidates.
Dr. Peña uses “Barbed” Quill sutures which are quick dissolving, absorbable sutures. These sutures require no knots and distribute the tension evenly speeding up the healing and maturation of the scar! A compression garment must be worn for several weeks for optimal results.
An arm lift surgery is often combined with body lift (shaping) procedures for patients who have undergone bariatric weight loss surgery and need to tighten and firm the lower body for a more refined, contoured look. This procedure is also frequently combined with other body contouring surgeries, such as the liposuction, a breast lift, and thigh lift. The upper body lift includes a breast lift, lateral chest lift, and arm lift.
