At his Naples, Florida aesthetic and plastic surgery office, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Manuel Peña, performs breast reduction surgery to help women to reduce their breast size. He also performs breast reduction for men with gynecomastia, a condition involving excess breast tissue.
HOW IS A BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE PERFORMED AND WILL THE BREASTS BE LIFTED DURING THE PROCEDURE?
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a complex plastic breast reconstruction surgery that involves removing excess skin, breast tissue, and fat to achieve a proportion that is better suited to the patient’s size. Breast size is reduced and any breast asymmetry is corrected.
A breast reduction may be recommended if the patient has excessively large breasts coupled with sagging. If the nipples point downward, and the breast skin seems loose or stretched, a breast lift can help remove the excess tissue, re-position the nipples, and provide a more youthful shape.
Breast reductions include a breast lift. Breast reduction surgery involves the following steps:
- Sedation with intravenous medication is administered.
- Incisions are made in discreet areas. In the majority of procedures, Dr. Peña will perform a breast reduction in which the incisions are made around the areola and extend below the breast in an anchor-shape also called an “inverted T” incision!
- Targeted areas of excess breast tissue and skin are precisely removed and the incisions are closed with sutures. The nipples and areolas will require a new position, especially in cases where patients are combining a breast lift with a breast reduction.
- Dr Peña addresses the excess lateral chest fat and fullness in the area in front of the armpit with liposuction at the time of the reduction contour the entire area!
The breast area will be bandaged and placed in a sports bra or specialized chest compression garment and you’ll be given explicit instructions to follow during the recovery period. Post-operative medications may be prescribed to reduce swelling and minimize discomfort. The final result is improved breast shape with reduced weight and size.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS?
During the healing period, the incision areas will be red and swollen. Since healing times and progress varies by individual, the degree of scarring will not be known for several months. Appointments will be scheduled for you to return to the office for a series of brief follow-up visits to ensure your body is healing properly.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?
In the hands of a skilled plastic surgeon the risk associated with breast reduction surgery are minimized. The incidence of surgical or post-operative complications is extremely low. Your current health condition and your strict adherence to recovery instructions will further minimize risks. During your initial breast reduction surgery consultation, Dr. Peña will review all of your medical information and make sure you have a clear understanding of your risk level. A history of past or current smoking can have deleterious effects on wound healing of a breast reduction. Remember, also, that choosing a cosmetic surgeon with ample experience and exceptional skill plays a large part in getting positive, aesthetically pleasing results. Hematoma, infection, and asymmetries are rare but possible complications. Alterations in nipple sensation can be expected and if you are planning to try to breast feed afterwards please discuss this with your doctor.
