How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Eyelid surgery is a delicate procedure that requires intravenous anesthesia if fat is going to be removed from the lower eyelid area. Otherwise upper lids can be treated with pure local anesthesia (although often a mild sedative is prescribed). After administering anesthesia, Dr. Peña precisely makes incisions in the natural folds and creases of the eye area. Fat deposits are redistributed or removed and excess skin is removed. Muscle tissue is tightened for a firm, toned appearance. When necessary the lower lid “belt” is tightened to restore youthful appearance and shape to the eye. The incisions are closed with tiny sutures.
Targeting the areas around the eyes, eyelid surgery helps soften crow’s feet, removes dark circles and puffy skin from below the eyes, and raises the lids themselves into a more alert and attractive position. It will not raise the eyebrows however! Eyebrow position will also be addressed as needed and a brow lift may be recommended!

What Can I Expect During Recovery From Eyelid Surgery?
Prior to your eyelid procedure, Dr. Peña and his staff will discuss what you can expect during recovery. You will also be given specific recovery information to take home. Generally speaking, you can expect some mild swelling and bruising that subsides within days.* As you continue to heal, the swelling and bruising will fade, replaced by enhanced, refreshed eye contours and a dramatic reduction in drooping or sagging of the eyelids.
Some activities will be temporarily restricted; these restrictions vary among patients. Specifically, activities such as, working out and lifting will be restricted for several weeks. The most restrictive time is during the first two weeks when heavy lifting or strenuous activity can cause post-operative bleeding and more bruising.
Can I Combine Eyelid Surgery with Other Procedures?
