What Are The American Board of Plastic Surgery Board Certification Requirements and Why Are They Important to Cosmetic Surgery Patients?
When looking for a plastic surgeon in the Naples area of Florida, there is one qualification that should never be compromised: board-certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
The alarming truth is, anyone with a medical degree, regardless of what specialty, can use the title “cosmetic surgeon” and perform complex aesthetic procedures. The only way to be sure your surgeon has actually trained in cosmetic procedures is choosing one who has met the requirements of the ABPS and earned the title Plastic Surgeon.
To become board-certified by the ABPS, a surgeon is required to meet these requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited medical school.
- Complete at least five years of residency – two of which are focused exclusively on plastic surgery – in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education.
- Pass comprehensive oral and written exams.
- Submit before and after photos of patients, along with other proof of proficiencies, for review by a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons for a set period of time.
Only by meeting all of these criteria can a surgeon become board-certified in plastic surgery. It is important to note that only by being-certified by the ABPS can a surgeon use the title “Plastic Surgeon.” ASPS members only operate in accredited medical facilities, adhere to a strict code of ethics and fulfill continuing medical education requirements in plastic surgery, including training in patient safety techniques. The best way to ensure your comfort, safety, and ultimate satisfaction is by selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon for any and all aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures.
Giving Back! Community Involvement and Charitable Work
Dr. Peña believes that it is extremely important to give back to those who are not as fortunate through community activities, charitable organizations, and international medical missions; such as, the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County, and international missions.
In 2017, Dr. Peña was recognized by August University Magazines for his philanthropy and commitment to his work. Also, in 1998, he received a “Simply the Best” nomination for Best Plastic Surgeon from Naples Illustrated, and was named one of the top doctors in Naples in 2008. In 2005 he received the honor of being named as one of the ten “Men of Distinction” by N magazine for his philanthropic community involvement.
Medical Missions
For over ten years, Dr. Peña has been participating in life-altering medical missions. These missions consist of full surgical and recovery teams, specializing in children and their congenital deformities such as cleft lip and palate. Dr. Peña and the medical team perform this much-needed, life-changing surgery on children and young adults over the course of one and two-week missions.
East African Mission
Dr Peña’s last mission trip was to Mbale, Uganda in 2009. In this trip that was coordinated by Operation Smile and Cure International, Dr Peña performed 25 surgeries on children and adults in a Cure International hospital working with the personnel that was in place in this neurosurgical hospital rather than bringing his own team. This was a more economically efficient mission and this model is becoming the norm in mission trips.
West African Mission
In 2005 and 2006, through Careforce International, Dr. Peña and his medical team traveled to Burkina Faso, a severely impoverished country located in West Africa. During each visit Dr. Peña donated his surgical expertise and performed over 35 surgeries repairing critical birth defects such as cleft lips and acquired defects including traumas, tumors, and infections. Additionally, he performed several skin-grafting procedures to help burn victims and teach current reconstructive techniques to medical staff at the local university.
Operation Rainbow in Guatemala, Mexico, and Brazil
In 1998, 1999, and 2000, Dr. Peña visited these countries on a medical mission organized by Operation Rainbow a non-profit organization that facilitates doctors donating their time and money to operating in impoverished countries. The mission helped children as well as adults suffering with severe congenital deformities such as cleft lip and palate so they may live a normal, happy life.
Dr. Peña also participates in the following:
