If you’re one of the estimated 30 million men and women with vein conditions, you are not alone. Spider veins are progressive and usually increase in number and visibility with age. Spider veins are more frequently seen on women due to changes in hormones, pregnancy, menopause and taking birth control pills. Also, extra weight puts additional pressure on the veins and prolonged standing or sitting may contribute to vein problems.
If you are self-conscious about spider veins, the small purple or red blood vessels that appear in the lower extremities, or small varicose veins, there is an effective FDA-approved treatment called Asclera® Sclerotherapy to address your spider veins.
At his Naples plastic surgery center, Peña Plastic Surgery, Dr. Manuel Peña offers a non-surgical solution to treat those all-too-colorful, thread-like spider veins. Asclera® Sclerotherapy is a process in which a medicated solution is injected into the veins. The solution works to shrink the blood vessels, causing the spider veins to eventually fade and disappear.
What Vein Conditions can be Treated with Asclera® Sclerotherapy?
Dr. Manuel Peña or his physician’s assistant, Lori Grant, PA, treat the following vein conditions with sclerotherapy:
- Uncomplicated spider veins (very small varicose veins ≤ 1 mm in diameter)
- Uncomplicated small varicose veins (1 to 3 mm in diameter) known as reticular veins
Ask Dr. Peña or his physician’s assistant if you are candidate for this safe and effective vein treatment by contacting his office and requesting a consultation.
How is Asclera® Sclerotherapy Performed?
Sclerotherapy is a safe medical procedure that has been used for many years to treat reticular veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy has improved and is considered a standard of care for the most effective treatments for removing unwanted leg veins.
The procedure begins with the sclerosing solution being carefully injected in the targeted veins. The solution irritates the blood vessels and over a period of weeks causes the veins to collapse and become less prominent or visible. The body naturally resorbs the treated vein. You can expect some bruising and color changes that will normalize in a short amount of time. You will be asked to avoid direct sunlight for a few weeks.
Dr. Manuel Peña advises his vein patients that the procedure takes only about a half hour, so you can fit treatment into your day with ease. There’s no downtime, so you can return to your normal activities right away. However, heavy lifting or vigorous exercise may be restricted for about 7-10 days. We will have you use compression stockings for 24 to 48 hours after the treatment.
This safe non-surgical procedure involves little discomfort and usually produces noticeably diminished veins.
