For many women a flaw in one’s appearance can be of great concern, embarrassment, and even shame. Many women find their breasts to be one of the most prominent features of their bodies, and when something is not quite right with their breasts, they may desire ways to cosmetically correct the areas of concern. By looking at the number of women of all ages undergoing cosmetic surgery each year in the United States, it’s quite clear that many individuals, not pleased with the way they look, are taking steps to improve and accentuate certain areas of their body through plastic surgery, breast augmentation, or enhancement. Using breast implants is immensely popular in this country, and its popularity continues to grow each year. But there are many other types of breast surgeries offered today including breast reduction surgery, breast lift surgery and even surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts.
WHAT IS BREAST ASYMMETRY?
Breast asymmetry is a difference in breast size or shape, or both from one breast to another. Breast asymmetry is actually a very common problem among the female population. In some cases, breast asymmetry is very mild and hardly noticeable, but in other cases, the difference is significant and visible to others. Sometimes surgery is indicated to equalize the size and shape of your breasts. Dr. Manuel Peña, board-certified plastic surgeon is uniquely qualified as a breast surgeon. He has performed many surgeries over the years to correct breast asymmetry.
Cosmetic surgery to correct breast asymmetry is typically recommended when the breasts differ from each other in a bra cup size. If the breasts differ less than a cup size, surgery may not be an option for you. During your initial consultation, Dr. Peña will discuss what is best for you and make recommendations accordingly.

I would again choose Dr. Peña with my eyes closed for any cosmetic procedure. thanks Maria, Rosa and other girls are great.👏👏👏👏” - Wendy Rodriguez (Google Review)Read More Reviews
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF BREAST ASYMMETRY?
Many women are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts. Some of these women will undergo breast augmentation for their own personal reasons to improve self-confidence and appearance. For women whose breasts are asymmetrical, wishing they were the same size, or even the same shape, and wanting breast augmentation to fix this is only a little different. These women may have found wearing bras and clothes that fit challenging and may have found wearing a swimming suit completely unnerving due to the differences in breast shape and size.
Breast asymmetry can be due to the following facts:
- Some breasts develop at different rates or are shaped totally differently, especially inferiorly and with asymmetric areolar size and projection. A particular problem related to asymmetry is the “constricted breast”!
- Pregnancy or weight gain.
- Previous surgeries or injuries.
- Mastectomy, lumpectomy, or other breast cancer surgeries or breast infections where breast tissue is removed may require correction of asymmetry.
HOW IS BREAST ASYMMETRY TREATED?
Just as there is more than one reason for breast asymmetry, there is more than one solution to fix it. However, if the reason for breast asymmetry is developmental, young women must wait until they are 18-years-old to undergo any kind of breast asymmetry correction surgery. Likewise, mothers who are breast feeding must wait, as should women who may be thinking about having children sometime in the future.
In the case of “constricted breast” the enlarged areola can be reduced and the lower pole/half of the breast expanded with either an implant or fat grafts. While this problem can occur bilaterally, rarely is it symmetrical so different techniques are required to get the optimum results!
HOW IS BREAST ASYMMETRY SURGERY PERFORMED?
This surgery is performed on women 18 or older who are in otherwise good health. If you are under the age of 18 and would like to learn more about this surgery, contact Dr. Peña’s office, and he will discuss your options with you during a consultation. Breast asymmetry correction is achieved through breast augmentation on one breast and breast reduction surgery on another to achieve perfectly symmetrical breasts.
This surgery performed by Dr. Peña has a very high success and patient satisfaction rate, as his patients are thrilled with the results. While you may read about medicines or substances to correct breast asymmetry, the only scientifically proven method to correct this problem is cosmetic surgery performed by a highly trained cosmetic surgeon.
